Introduction The African Journal of Legal Studies (AJLS) invites submissions of articles, notes and book reviews related to governance, democracy and the rule of law in Africa. The focus of the AJLS is on the interplay between law, public policy and social change in Africa. Although manuscripts are published in four major issues each quarter beginning in May 2004, to ensure timely commentary on major legal developments with significant implications for Africa, AJLS hopes to periodically publish one or two shorter articles in a monthly supplement. There are no deadlines for submissions given our flexible publication schedule. To encourage diversity of perspectives and collaboration between scholars from Francophone and Anglophone regions, the journal hopes to be in a position to receive articles in both English and French in the near future. For now, authors are asked to submit manuscripts written in English preferably by e-mail as an attachment or by mail on a computer diskette. Where possible, abstracts of all articles published will be made available in both languages. Format Articles should normally range between 6,000 and 7,500 words and should be prefaced by an abstract of not more than 200 words highlighting the central arguments and findings of the submission. Book reviews and Notes should in general not exceed 2,000 words. All authors are required to submit a 100-word bibliographic note or less outlining educational qualifications, institutional affiliation, current research interests, and where applicable, major publications and conference presentations. All manuscripts should be in the Times New Roman 12 point font, doubled-spaced, with footnotes numbered consecutively. The document must be formatted with one-inch margins throughout. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of their footnotes as our editors cannot undertake to verify them. Given the online format of this publication, diagrams, figures and other types of graphical inserts are discouraged, or where necessary, must be kept to a minimum. The AJLS will not consider manuscripts that have been submitted elsewhere for publication consideration. The journal staff uses and prefers Microsoft Word. However, submissions crafted in other easily convertible word processing programs such as Corel WordPerfect 10 or higher may also be accepted. If you are unsure about the software program that you are using, kindly contact the Executive Editor at ajls@africalawinstitute.org. Citation Authors are responsible for ensuring that all citations are complete, accurate, and up-to-date. Articles submitted by those in the legal field must conform to the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 5th edition (the McGill Guide). Articles from authors in the social sciences may follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition. Authors without access to the McGill Guide should contact the journal to request our style sheet. Evaluation To maintain the highest scholarly standards possible, all articles received by the AJLS are reviewed by the Executive Editor and at least one associate editor, a member of the Consultative Board, and in close or controversial cases, an external referee who is an expert in the subject area of the manuscript. Manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be formatted in the journal’s style and published in Portable Document Format on this web site. Comment on Articles AJLS invites our readers to provide feedback, commentary or questions to our published authors. In so doing, our goal is to advance scholarly debate and reflection on the challenges facing Africa in these early years of the twenty-first century. Readers are asked to send their comments/questions on articles via e-mail to ajlscomments@africalawinstitute.org 1) indicating the name of the author to whom it is addressed, 2) the title of the published article and 3) the volume in which it was published. AJLS reserves the right to edit reader comments and author responses before they are posted on this web site. Copyright
Policy Articles appearing in the AJLS are accepted on the understanding that the material is the original work of the author(s). Authors agree to indemnify us for all damages, fines and costs associated with a finding of copyright infringement by the author or by AJLS in disseminating the author’s material. Copyright of all manuscripts accepted for publication is held by AJLS. However, in exceptional circumstances, authors may be granted a limited license to publish the work elsewhere provided that AJLS is acknowledged as the original publisher. Please contact the Executive Editor to enquire about your situation. Publication
