Marong, Vice-President
Alhaji Marong holds a Doctor of Civil Law degree in
International Investment and Sustainable Development
Law, as well as a Master of Laws in International
Business Law from McGill University (Institute of
Comparative Law). Before McGill, he studied at the
University of Sierra-Leone where he obtained his LL.B
degree, and then at the Sierra-Leone Law School for
his Bar. As part of over five years of legal practice
experience, he worked as Senior State Counsel for
Attorney-Generals Chambers in The Gambia, and
as Legal Adviser for the National Environment Agency
of The Gambia. He has also done consultancy work for
the Law Reform Commission of The Gambia, and for the
United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
In March and April 2000, Alhaji worked as an Intern
at the Legal Affairs Division of the World Trade Organization
in Geneva. He currently teaches International Commercial
Transactions and Public International Law at the Department
of Law, American University of Armenia in Yerevan.
His research interests include issues of norm creation
in international law, the confluence between international
business regimes and social and environmental concerns,
multinational corporations and developing countries,
international protection of biological diversity as
well as access and benefit sharing of biological resources,
law and development. His most recent publications
examine the anti-corruption principles in Africa (Denver
J.I.L.P. 2002) and the role of legal norms in the
realization of sustainable development (Georgetown
I.E.L.Rev., Fall 2003).
